A pond you’ve constructed is very different from “natures” version of a pond.  Nature would ensure the right amount of fish for the volume of water, it would allow the water to be littered with sticks, rocks, trees, and flowing water from a lake, and it would naturally keep the environment clean for the fish to live a normal life.  Our ponds are not so lucky.  We must use a pump and filtration process to accomplish what nature naturally does.  To enjoy a beautiful water feature and have happy, lively, colorful fish we must have a filtration process.

Pumps are required to supply the filter with the water flow required for the filtration process.  The filtration process is responsible for cleaning the dirt and debris from the pond water.  It also is responsible for breaking down the waste products in order to rid the pond of ammonia to keep the pond chemically clean.  Pond plants are an effective way to take care of harmful compounds that remain after the biological and mechanical filtration.  Without these processes you would not have a healthy pond environment.

The movement of water through the pump and filter provides oxygen to the pond water.  In warm weather the demand for oxygen is at its highest.  This is when the fish’s metabolism is most active and the warm water causes the amount of dissolve oxygen in the water to decrease.  As the water temperature cools, the amount of dissolve oxygen in the water will increase.   If oxygen levels fall below 3-5 mg of oxygen per liter of water, any Koi in the pond will suffer and eventually die.  Fountains and waterfalls can help provide adequate aeration in the Koi pond.
